Groupon almost gave me Malware

I have never actually purchased a Groupon deal, but I have thought about it. One that caught my attention recently seemed a bit too good to be true, but I figured I would take a look anyway. The deal offered up to 8 oil changes, and some other services, for $59. Given that one oil change can cost that much, I was intrigued. So I clicked on the link. And saw this:

I contacted Groupon about what happened, but I haven’t heard back yet. I will update this post if and when I do.

Update

Groupon emailed me. They claim that they checked the link and there was no malware. Of course that does not explain the malware warning I got. I asked them what they had to say about that, I will update again when I hear back.  In their response they claim they are very careful about the links.

I would have to say, not careful enough, or my AVG would not have alerted.

Update

As suspected, Groupon didn’t really have an explanation for why I had a malware alert. I specifically asked if they thought the malware warning was fake and they said no. Of course, they might have assumed I was asking if I had faked it, who knows.

I did warn the customer service person I was blogging on the issue and suggested that s/he follow up if s/he learns any more.

Looks like that is the end of the conversation.
