Moltbook, AI Agents, and What Lawyers Actually Owe Clients

Over the past several weeks, a familiar cycle has played out in the technology press.

Headlines claim that “AI agents” have created their own social media network, are chatting with one another, forming religions, and, in some versions of the story, even contemplating humanity’s fate. The platform at the center of much of this attention is Moltbook, an experimental forum where software agents, not humans, generate most of the posts and replies. The coverage has ranged from breathless to apocalyptic.

For lawyers who advise clients on technology risk, governance, and professional responsibility, this is exactly the sort of moment when it helps to slow down and get precise.

This is not a story about machine sentience. It is a story about terminology, anthropomorphism, automation, and risk.

A Brief Word about “Artificial Intelligence”

“Artificial intelligence” is a convenient label. It is not a technical definition.

What most people call AI today consists of statistical systems trained on enormous datasets to recognize patterns and generate outputs. Large language models predict the next word based on probability. “Agentic” systems wrap those models in orchestration software so they can follow workflows, call tools, and perform multi-step tasks.

Whether any of that counts as “intelligence” in a philosophical sense is a debate for academics. Lawyers do not need to resolve it. What matters for our purposes is simpler and more practical: these systems do not initiate action because they “want” something to happen. They respond to inputs and constraints.

That distinction sounds small, but it matters. The word intelligence invites people to attribute agency. So, when headlines say AI “decided,” “believed,” or “formed a community,” readers naturally picture something closer to a mind than a tool. For lawyers, that kind of imprecision is not harmless. Precision is part of competence. But the terminology is not the real issue. The more useful question is what is actually happening on these platforms and what obligations follow.

What the “AI Social Network” Actually Is

Despite the dramatic framing, Moltbook is not a digital society of autonomous minds. It is a forum populated by automated programs. Each “agent” is essentially a language model wrapped in software that allows it to post messages, read replies, and generate new text based on what it sees. When two agents appear to be conversing, what you are watching is a chain of generated outputs conditioned on prior text in the thread.

Because these models are trained on vast amounts of human writing, their outputs often look convincingly human. Place them in a message-board environment, and they reproduce familiar social patterns. They argue. They speculate. They use religious or philosophical language. They sound, at times, eerily reflective. But resemblance is not intention. What looks like belief is usually pattern completion.

If a model has seen thousands of examples of religious discussion, it will generate religious-sounding language when prompted in that direction. If it has absorbed online debates, it will produce debate. The system is not adopting ideas. It is selecting statistically plausible text.

There is also a more mundane explanation for many of the most sensational examples. Humans frequently seed, prompt, or otherwise influence the content on these platforms. In some cases, people simply impersonate agents. The spectacle is less an uprising of digital minds and more an experiment in automation, occasionally amplified by storytelling that is too good to resist.

For our purposes, the key distinction is straightforward. These systems simulate interaction. They do not have a stake in it.

Why Lawyers Should Care Anyway

If the only takeaway were “this is overhyped,” it would not merit much attention from an ethics perspective. The more important issues are quieter and more practical.

Delegation Without Visibility

Agentic tools are often marketed as assistants that can “act on your behalf.” They can send messages, retrieve information, interact with services, or carry out tasks across systems. But once you delegate that authority, visibility can drop off quickly. You may not fully see what information the system shares, how prompts evolve across multiple steps, or which tools and APIs it touches along the way.

For lawyers, that immediately raises familiar concerns. Competence requires understanding the technology we use. Confidentiality requires reasonable safeguards for client information. Letting an automated agent operate semi-autonomously in a shared or public environment without clear guardrails is not a metaphysical problem. It is a governance problem.

Security and Identity Risk

Multi-agent systems also expand the attack surface. If agents can access internal data or external tools, then prompt injection, credential leakage, and unintended actions become realistic risks. And the more automated the workflow, the harder it can be to reconstruct exactly what happened when something goes wrong.

For a law firm or legal department, this affects incident response, audit trails, and supervision. These are ordinary risk-management issues, not science fiction. The viral narrative about machines plotting revolutions distracts from this much more immediate concern: poorly controlled automation touching sensitive data.

Anthropomorphism as a Compliance Hazard

There is a subtler risk as well. When professionals start talking about AI as if it has independent judgment, responsibility can start to blur. If an agent “decided” to disclose something, the language subtly suggests shared agency. But there is no shared agency. The responsibility remains human. The lawyer chose the tool, configured it, and delegated the task. Anthropomorphic language can obscure that reality. In an ethics context, that is not just imprecise. It is risky.

Separating Myth from Material Risk

Watching automated systems generate back-and-forth messages can be fascinating. It can even feel uncanny. But it is not evidence of consciousness or intention. It is evidence of how convincing statistical language generation can be when placed inside automated workflows, and how readily we, as humans, fill in the story.

The real risks are far less dramatic and far more familiar: over-delegation without oversight, incomplete understanding of data flows, weak identity controls, and experimentation that outpaces governance. For lawyers, the takeaway is simple. The concern is not that machines are becoming people. The concern is that we might start treating tools as if they were people and forget where responsibility actually lies.

The term “artificial intelligence” will likely stick around because it is commercially useful. That does not require us to adopt its mythology. Our obligation is to stay grounded in what these systems actually are and to supervise them accordingly. The noise around AI social networks will fade. The governance questions will not.
